2 min readA 28-year-old man was hacked to death by a robber in northeast Delhi’s Sonia Vihar early on Friday. The accused was subsequently overpowered and thrashed to death by the victim’s family and local residents.
The victim, identified as Chitranjan Kumar from Bihar’s Sheohar district, stayed in the Chauhan Patti village near Sonia Vihar with his elder brother’s family and owned a mobile recharge shop. His brother, a jeweller, operates a jewellery shop which he runs from the ground floor of the house.
According to the police, the robber, who is yet to be identified, seemingly gained entry into the first floor by climbing a drainpipe carrying a torch, a rod, an iron cutter and an axe.
Chitaranjan was sleeping in a room on the first floor when he noticed and confronted the assailant.
Push came to shove during the physical altercation that followed between the two at the conclusion of which Chitaranjan was hacked to death.
“The robber then went down a floor and attempted to ransack a room located next to the one where his victim’s elder brother, Shiv, was asleep when he was noticed and decided to lock himself in to protect himself,” said a police officer.
However, Shiv and his brother-in-law Raj Kumar forced themselves into the room where the robber had locked himself, snatched away his weapons and began assaulting him. Soon, the family’s neighbours rushed into their home due to the commotion and joined them in assaulting the assailant.
The police were informed even as the family discovered that Chitaranjan had been killed and the accused sustained serous injuries due to the assault. Both of them were rushed to the GTB Hospital where doctors declared them dead. A case has been registered and investigation is underway.
